20 gauge for ducks - 2005/04/21 04:21
I usually use my 12 gauge pump for duck hunting.
Last tuesday, I decided to try my 20 gauge Browning semiauto. I used Federal 3 inch shells, with one ounce of #2 shot. 1330 FPS velocity.
I hunted XXXX XXXXXX, in station #7. There was a big gap between my station and the ones to the north. It turned out that there was a huge flock of Teal spending the night in the gap, but they never came close enough.
I waited a long time to get my first shot. Finally, my partner was able to call in two blue-wing teal that flared just before they got over us. I dropped the first one (about a 25 yard shot).
A flock of mottled ducks headed straight over us, and I shot a drake from about 15 yards away.
I wonder what would have happened if I had had any longer, say 40 yard, shots? The 20 gauge did quite well. Both birds required a finishing shot to send them to duck heaven. But that is often necessary when I use my 12 gauge.
