animal medical research options - 2006/08/06 11:17 This animated portrayal of factory farming issues and I guess partly a spoof on The Matrix may be of interest to some

Anyway, what movie or music or other celebrities do you know of who strongly support improved conditions for animals? In a recent post by me mentioning Sarah McLachlan on alt.gossip.celebrities,alt.showbiz.gossip,alt.music.s-mclachlan someone followed up just on her group saying well how can she support both breast cancer research and improved conditions for animals, and that in a similar predicament Melissa Etheridge removed her support for PETA since it does not like use of animals in any medical research even for cancer.

I said that probably Sarah balances things somehow, you would have to ask her, and that Ms. Etheridge probably does not give up all her support for improving conditions for animals, just the point that some medical research involving animals may still be unavoidably necessary.

However I also replied that some options to using live pain-sensitive and aware animals in cancer research would

1. culture cells and even whole organs and test drugs on cancers induced in those

2. using genome research, we should be able to do computer simulations of the effect of drugs to some extent

3. of course the goal is cures and once we find those there will be no need for animal research any more

4. animals could be genetically engineered to have no pain response, and used as a short term measure still

5. some babies are born effectively without brains and some animals could be genetically engineered to similarly have little or no brains (and hopefully no pain response)
and used in animal research even if they have to be on a little life support.

What other options have been brought up by PETA members and others on talk.politics.animals ? I guess I will do a quick search on http://groups.google.com now for group:talk.politics.animals cancer but don't have time to go through it and summarize on this thread tonight but maybe one of you will.

re:animal medical research options - 2006/08/06 12:37 But for brain tumour research I guess at least a partial brain would be needed, whether cultured cells or otherwise, but ideally without higher functions.

I should have set followups just to the first two groups talk.politics.animals,sci.med.diseases.cancer but didn't so apologies to any in the veg groups not interested in this.
