Cruelty Free Food - 2003/03/15 18:19 Are there any sites out there that address resources for people who are against treating animals so horribly, but not against eating them?
Maybe this is the wrong group to be asking....I got suckered in by a peta video on public access....I've always known that I would be haunted and horrified if I ever took the time to actually watch that sort of thing, but I'd continued to nurture my denial about it. I guess I've also been influenced by my two-year old daughter. She loves animals and doesn't like to eat meat, and I'm sure that she
*really* wouldn't eat meat if she knew what happened to her barnyard friends. Anyway, I just don't know anything about how to find cruelty free food - especially dairy - how to interpret labels - what does free-range chicken really mean? I did read about a local farm that seems to treat their animals really well, but they only sell eggs and pork (minumum purchase 1/2 pig) We could definitely go without eating meat, but dairy would be really hard. And like I said, I don't really have a problem with respectfully killing animals - my problem is with torturing them. I'd also be interested in getting information about fish and how they experience things.

re:Cruelty Free Food - 2003/03/16 05:34 Explain to her that animals are everywhere in fields and orchards and that the reality is that they die all the time in the production of vegetables too, not only meat. It's better to live with the truth than to live in denial and fear.

Anyway, I just don't know anything about how to find cruelty

It means it gets to roam around in a flock, not necessarily outdoors, but not in a small cage.

Free range meat is available by mail-order in smaller amounts. Also check some other local butchers and co-ops, there may be other sources.

First of all, you cannot trust Animal Rights videos, they are produced by people who's goal it is to eliminate ALL animal use. There's no evidence that anything approaching "torture" is widespread. You see the same incidents and violators reported over and over by AR fanatics. As for cruelty-free foods, there are none, even the bread on your table comes at a cost of animal death in the fields and storehouses. What do exist are certification programs sponsored by various animal welfare organizations that require minimum standards of care much beyond what is required in a factory farm environment. This is the one in my local area
