269 animals rescued from Lancashire house

19.09.2003 -

British animal welfare officers have rescued 244 dogs, 16 parrots, seven cats, a rabbit and a chinchilla from a single house.

The animals were crammed into all parts of a three-bedroom home owned by a middle-aged couple in Carnforth in Lancashire, northwest England.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said: "This is the largest seizure of animals in our history. It is huge."
The couple have been interviewed by RSPCA inspectors.

The haul of dogs included shih-tzus, dachshunds, lhasa apsos, bearded collies, corgis, chihuahuas, poodles, pekinese and Yorkshire terriers.

The birds included a macaw, Amazonian parrot and an African Grey.

The animals have been taken to various RSPCA shelters across the country. =A0=A0 =A9Copyright 2003, NZ Herald

re:269 Animals rescued from Lancashire house in UK - 2004/10/05 00:01 If it's "whingering garbage", then why are you continuing the thread?
Why did you bother to reply in the first place?

forum for all of the world's citizens, not just snotty Europeans. Just as the untold dozens of Europeans who post articles of events, oddball or otherwise that occur in the US would be *on-topic* in soc.culture.usa

"culture", in this case British and European. If the story was '269
Llamas rescued from a barn in Lima', the post would have been to soc.culture.peru.

Good for you as I would never ask you to censor your right of free expression.

Now, does anyone wish to talk about why insane folks keep so many
Animals as pets knowing full well that they couldn't possibly care for them. Recently, there was a woman IIRC in NYC who was arrested on
Animal Cruelty charges for having many dozens of Cats as well as a few other species cooped up in her apartment. She claimed many were feral needing a home and the fact that if bought to an Animal Shelter the pets would have been destroyed. OTOH, even though her assumptions were correct, the cruel irony was that when Police entered her apartment on complaints of an persistent 'odor', the Animals were found to be sick and malnourished with the premises littered knee deep in garbage and feces.

re:269 Animals rescued from Lancashire house in UK - 2004/10/05 18:28 I saw the TV report on this issue. I fail to see what motivates these people.

On one hand they must have some feeling towards animals, otherwise they would not provide a home for them.

Having given them a home they neglect them to the point of inflicting what almost amounts to torture.

Has anyone a decent explanation for their actions?
