The DEFRA decision to issue a general licence to cull Ruddy ducks, supported by bird charity the Royal Society for the Protection of
Birds, has been branded a declaration of war on Britain's birdlife by the League Against Cruel Sports.

The League Against Cruel Sports has spoken out against the decision by
DEFRA to permit amateur sports shooters to shoot, wound and kill ruddy ducks as part of a cull which it is claimed will protect native duck species.

Slaughter of the Ruddy duck has been approved by leading bird organisation - the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, despite the anger of many bird watchers. The League has launched an advertising campaign in November's issue of "Bird Watching" magazine as a wake up call to RSPB members - asking them to demand a change in the organisation's policy.

In a trial period, the cull has already seen non-target species killed including a long tailed duck. Guidelines also allow for nests and eggs to be destroyed as part of the systematic programme of persecution.

League Against Cruel Sports Chairman John Cooper said: "It is horrific that the planned killing of Britain's wild bird population is seen as acceptable by the RSPB and DEFRA. Both organisations should be protecting Britain's wildlife - not seeking to eradicate it.

"The culture of countryside 'management' by shooting to kill is totally unacceptable. To embark on such a program with respect to the
Ruddy duck is simply taking a backwards step.

"Given that non target species were killed as part of the 'controlled' trial, we should not be surprised if this 'licence to kill' for amateur shooters gives rise to an uncontrolled slaughter of both Ruddy ducks and non target species.

"It is bad enough to seek to eradicate a whole species, but to do so using licenced amateur shooters makes it much more likely that birds will be wounded, or that the wrong birds altogether are targetted.

"Quite simply to attempt to carry out wildlife management in such an arbitrary and uncontrolled manner should not be an option."

League Against Cruel Sports Chairman John Cooper called on those members of the RSPB angered by their organisation's stance on the
Ruddy duck to join forces with the League to campaign for an end to the 'licenced slaughter'.

You seem to have missed the part where no one actually wants the ducks killed and in fact at least 3/4 of landowners have refused DEFRA access to their lands to carry out the cull. Do try to keep up saunby, you cannot have sex with animals and do serious research, one or the other, which is it?
