For Feral Power - Reuben James - 2006/02/21 07:03
Back in October as I was talking to a farmer about deer hunting on his ground he asked," Do you want a kitten?"
"Uh, no," says I," I already have a cat named Reuben James and I don't think he would take kindly to a kitten."
About that time a little black kitten came up and cuddled up to my boot. It looked to be about 5 weeks old and was having trouble walking.
I asked the farmer what was wrong with it. He said it was probably starving as the mother had abandoned it.
I moved away from it a little and the kitten would follow me and cuddle up next to my boot again.
I re-emphasized to the farmer I didn't want a kitten.
After receiving permission to hunt his place I then went to do some scouting for treestand placement.
When I came back the farmer was gone. I looked into the barn and the kitten was curled up in a ball on the dirt floor of the barn. Pitiful looking. That did it. I picked him up and put him in my truck.
So here I was looking for a place to kill an animal and ended up saving an animal.
I called the wife and told here we had a new addition to the family. I stopped by my vets on the way home. The vet confirmed he was a male that was only about 5 weeks old and was malnutritioned. We fed his some kitten cat food and they said they would keep him overnight to get him on his feet.
I called the next morning and told them to check him for feline leukemia and start him on his kitten shots.
We picked him up that afternoon.
Of course Reuben James didn't care much for him, but after a week or so of hissing and spitting Reuben James started to take a liking to the new kitten, which we named Murphy. They became buds.
Reuben James (8 years old) seemed to have a second "childhood" come upon him. He played with the kitten as if he was a kitten too. There times when the old man would get a little pissed at the kitten and would wallop him one pretty good.
5 months has passed and when we came back from vacation we noticed that Reuben James had lost some weight while being boarded. That was unusual for him. When we got him home he was off his feed and didn't want to have anything to do with the kitten.
He then came down with diarrhea. We took him to the vet and they discovered a tumor in his intestines. They operated on him and removed the tumor and about 12" of his intestines. Sadly to say Reuben James never fully recovered or the cancer was spread as he just went downhill. We ended up putting him down two weeks after the operation.
So, now Murphy is the only cat we have (for now)and he is a handful.
Maybe God saw the pain that we would be going through with Reuben James and sent Murphy as a comforter.
