Arrest Made in SUV Vandalism Case: Vegan to be Arraigned - 2005/12/23 12:57
'Pacifist' Held in Arson Denies role in environmental group defacing dealerships LOS ANGELES TIMES; This story was supplemented with Associated Press reports.
September 14, 2003
Los Angeles - Federal authorities have arrested a 25-year-old activist in connection with the firebombing of a Hummer dealership last month, an attack linked to the radical environmental group Earth Liberation Front.
Josh Connole, an installer of solar panels, was taken into custody Friday outside a bungalow he and five friends had converted into what the roommates described as a co-op dedicated to veganism, conservation and world peace.
He was booked for investigation of felony arson and vandalism and jailed in lieu of $825,000 bail. Arraignment was set for tomorrow.
Friends said Connole had nothing to do with the vandalism and describe him as a pacifist who is committed to change without violence.
"He's a low-key, nonviolent person," said Lisa Rosen, Connole's boss at the solar business and the commune's manager. "He's a pacifist. I don't think he's any great threat to national security."
Sources close to the investigation said that Connole was seen on surveillance tape shot just before the fire at the Hummer dealership.
But Connole said in a phone call from his cell that the man in the video was not him and that he is not a member of ELF.
The arrest came three weeks after vandals apparently acting in the name of radical environmentalism struck four car dealerships and several individual car owners in the Los Angeles area.
They set fire to one Chevrolet dealership and destroyed or defaced dozens of Hummers and other sport utility vehicles.
ELF, a loose association of militant environmentalists, claimed responsibility for the vandalism on its Web site.
ELF also has taken responsibility for a $50-million arson fire that destroyed an apartment construction site in San Diego. Federal authorities say they view the group as a domestic terrorist organization.

Possibly, but not necessarily. Trader Joe's sells a "vegan" cookie, and they are clearly identified as such on the bag. They're very good, but they're not particularly healthful; if I remember correctly, two cookies provide something like 30% of the recommended daily intake of saturated fat. I know there are highly saturated vegetable fats, but without butter in them, I'm mystified as to how the cookies could contain so much saturated fat, unless they've used enormous quantities of palm oil.
No, they aren't. Their danger for occupants of other cars has long been established, but now it emerges that they aren't very safe for the occupants of the SUVs themselves, either, due to the high propensity for rollover. The current head of some federal transportation-related agency has even got himself in some hot water with the industry and the politicos in the administration for openly acknowledging this.
Oh, I don't know about that. Not to justify the fires, of course, but bear in mind that the environmental damage from vehicles extends far beyond the obvious examples of air pollution. These things use more of everything. There is the direct environmental harm of their operation, as well as the harm that results from the extraction, transport and refining of the products they use more of.
Motor vehicles in the U.S. are "too cheap" across the board, in the sense that operators of them don't bear the full cost of them. SUVs are the worst of the lot.
The phony-baloney Hollywood types who frequently drive them out here, Democrats almost to a person (but Schwarzenneger drives one, too), sure do a lot to advance environmentalism...not.

The NHTSA head, Jeffrey Runge, MD, disagrees.
I'm off to Trader Joe's. I'm going to buy some of those "vegan" cookies, if they're in stock; they're damned good.

re:Arrest Made in SUV Vandalism Case: Vegan to be Arraigned - 2005/12/23 21:47
mentioned how his comrades ate vegan cookies and lit candles for him as warrants were being executed. I laughed when the reporter said "vegan cookies." The only reason he would report that is if the comrades made points about them.
We may find out just how ad hoc ELF is. As admitted by the spokesman for ALF in the interview I pasted last week, ALF, ELF, and other groups share common values, motivations, ideals, and probably membership. I want these groups infiltrated and exposed for what they are.
There's nothing noble about terrorism - not when it's practiced by al-Qaida or Hamas, and not when it's done in the name of saving the earth, either. It's cowardly and decidedly undemocratic. It's an attempt to impose minority rule - using fear and intimidation to make others act as the terrorists wish. ELF actions haven't killed anybody yet, but their violence is costly and has great deadly potential. For what it's worth, the spectacular fires they've set can't exactly be described as environmentally benign, either. http://tinyurl.com/nbut
The first several print stories I found about Connole's arrest only mentioned his and his comrades' activism, but none suggested a source of income. The story I linked was the first to call him a solar panel installer.
"I didn't have anything to do with that," Connole told the Los Angeles Times by phone from his jail cell. "I didn't know what Earth Liberation Front was about. Someone mentioned to me the Hummer incident when it happened, but I don't watch TV or read
causes than standing on corners with signs. I'm not an active member in any organization." http://tinyurl.com/nbvf
Black Avenger gets it right:
If the ELF validates anything at all, it is that isolation, illiteracy and ignorance aren't the exclusive property of a youth wandering in the desert with the rage of his Moslem teachers echoing in his head.
I think the thing I detest most about the would-be ecologists and chicken- hearted thugs in ELF, who are doing their best work in the shadows after dark, is that they are so self-centered and self-absorbed in their politically correct indignation that they are indifferent to the fact that for each SUV and motorcar dealership they burn, they potentially are putting some grease monkey or salesman out of work.
I don't suppose trivial truths like that makes a lick of difference after you've been anointed in the hallowed knowledge that only friends of the Earth are privy to. http://tinyurl.com/nbvs
They're safe, at least for the people in them. The fires at the West Covina dealership caused more ecological harm than the vehicles would in their years of service. The cars I've seen belching smoke around here are usually older Japanese cars (why do old Mitsubishis and Acuras smoke like Dice Clay?) driven by immigrants.
The biggest discouragement right now is the cost of fuel. I have friends with H2s who get panic attacks everytime they fill up.
I'm sure it will be, as soon as the bastards are caught.

re:Arrest Made in SUV Vandalism Case: Vegan to be Arraigned - 2005/12/23 23:22
Two interesting things near the bottom of the Times's story today about the guy (http://tinyurl.com/nbop). First, they quote one of his fellow activists and co-residents of the "co-op" where he lived:
"You got the wrong man," said Jessie Dowling, 22, a co-op member. "This is framed. And everyone in this household wants to do everything in their power to show that we are people who are nonviolent. Although we do have extreme political views, all we do and all we have ever done is exercise our 1st Amendment rights."
They admit to being extremists.
Next, even though the arrest occurred Friday morning,
communiqué already on Saturday:
The Earth Liberation Front issued a statement on Saturday saying Connole's arrest had been made "on what appears to be nonexistent grounds."
"We believe this arrest is part of a pattern of harassment the FBI has been visiting on activists in Southern California," the group said in an e-mail response to a Times e-mail inquiry.
Time (and evidence) will tell if this guy is guilty. There is no question, however, that he and his fellow "co-op" residents are environmental extremists, and certainly sympathetic to the arsonists, if they are not the arsonists themselves.
Full disclosure: I am extremely hostile to SUVs. There are very serious problems with them in numerous areas, most of the concerning safety and environmental impact. However, I believe they should be severely discouraged through punitive registration and insurance fees. The kind of action undertaken by the ELF renegades is illegal, and should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
