Re:Vegetarian for 8 Years - All of a Sudden Craving Meat Badly... - 2005/06/14 12:32
something different? There was a period when Big Macs kept coming to mind, and then I realized I was thinking of the sauce, and the thought then went away. I think we all get into ruts, and it may be important to be trying new foods, which perhaps is what you are craving rather than a craving specifically for meat (though it may be manifested by thoughts of meat). I would discount people returning to meat (or turning to meat) as an indication that meat is needed. Someone who has been raised as a vegetarian may want to try meat, and since they haven`t had it, may find they want it. 23 years after I last ate meat, I am aware that some of my abandoning meat was to assert my adulthood, and it could work just as well for someone raised as a vegetarian. And people who return to meat after a period may be people who didn`t drop meat for a particularly compelling (to them) reason, or they may find that they don`t want to be meatless in the long term. Not eating meat is not particularly different from a lot of parts of life, where people do something for a time, even intending it to be forever, and then they change. Or someone making the choice early on may find that their choices in life haven`t remained the same. Eight years is nothing when you are 40; but 8 years when you`re 14 is almost forever. I do discount the need for meat, after all I haven`t eaten any since 1979. But I think these examples you bring up need debunking. I do suspect you are craving for something, and you need to find whatever will fill that craving, without automatically assuming it is meat that you desire.
