Vegetarian for 8 Years - All of a Sudden Craving Meat Badly... - 2005/06/14 11:14 I`m looking for some advice. I`ve been vegetarian for about 8 years now - I eat dairy and eggs on occasion, drink soy milk and am cautious of my protien intake.
Over the last year, my activity level has ramped. Adventure Racing, half marathon, exercise 5-6 days a week.
Accompanying this change is a HUGE craving "meat" which is driving me nuts. I increased my protien intake when my activity level changed. A personal trainer has said my protien intake is more the adequate but the cravings remain.
Some people have suggested that meats provide better quality protien/iron/etc and maybe that is why I have begun to crave after 8 years.... I have no clue.
I also have some vegetarian friends (some raised from kids as vegetarian) that have gone through this and ended up going back to eating fish and chicken, etc.
I`m looking for some advice on how to deal with the cravings!

Re:Vegetarian for 8 Years - All of a Sudden Craving Meat Badly... - 2005/06/14 12:32 something different? There was a period when Big Macs kept coming to mind, and then I realized I was thinking of the sauce, and the thought then went away. I think we all get into ruts, and it may be important to be trying new foods, which perhaps is what you are craving rather than a craving specifically for meat (though it may be manifested by thoughts of meat).
I would discount people returning to meat (or turning to meat) as an indication that meat is needed.
Someone who has been raised as a vegetarian may want to try meat, and since they haven`t had it, may find they want it. 23 years after I last ate meat, I am aware that some of my abandoning meat was to assert my adulthood, and it could work just as well for someone raised as a vegetarian.
And people who return to meat after a period may be people who didn`t drop meat for a particularly compelling (to them) reason, or they may find that they don`t want to be meatless in the long term. Not eating meat is not particularly different from a lot of parts of life, where people do something for a time, even intending it to be forever, and then they change. Or someone making the choice early on may find that their choices in life haven`t remained the same. Eight years is nothing when you are 40; but 8 years when you`re 14 is almost forever.
I do discount the need for meat, after all I haven`t eaten any since 1979. But I think these examples you bring up need debunking. I do suspect you are craving for something, and you need to find whatever will fill that craving, without automatically assuming it is meat that you desire.

Re:Vegetarian for 8 Years - All of a Sudden Craving Meat Badly... - 2005/06/14 13:47 Neither my wife or myself are vegetarians, but their is one thing we both have noticed. My wife has a problem with Iron, and when her Iron levels she craves meat. Just a thought.

Re:Vegetarian for 8 Years - All of a Sudden Craving Meat Badly... - 2005/06/14 14:48 I have some sort of similar experience that I want to modify my diet as I feel it was inadequate for my needs. However when I was introduced to Qigong and Tai Chi where the practice of deep abdominal breathing was emphasized my cravings just vanished. The explanation for this according to these Taoist people is that if we indulge in more strenous activity but not practice good deep breathing we are depleting our body of Chi or Prana( in Indian) which is vital energy which is important to our body as well. That is one reason why some sports minded people turn to drugs as they experience something missing in them which they outright blame on the inadequate things the take into their bodies.Ccmmon Shallow thoracic and chest breathing deplete our vital energy. It does not store the b

Then you should practice activities that encourage the cultivation of Chi/prana just what I mentioned.Alternatively you can take yoga classes as they encourage good breathing practices seldom encourage in western style activites.Good Luck! Re:Vegetarian for 8 Years - All of a Sudden Craving Meat Badly... - 2005/06/14 15:24 Make sure its not a physical based craving by getting all of your nutrients. Eat a lot of freshly prepared green ( & other vegtables ). Complement your protiens ( beans + whole grains, beans + seeds ). Eat fresh fruit. Stay away from white flour products, sugar, and other refined carbs.
Try this protien powder. It is complemented amino acid mix lysine & methonine, amino acids rare in plants: http://naturade.com.cob-web.org:8888/products/index.asp
Try all of that first.

Re:Vegetarian for 8 Years - All of a Sudden Craving Meat Badly... - 2005/06/14 17:02 hi tash this seems to be a normal step in "withdrawal" from meat you might try some meat substitutes if you already have not or maybe some meditation, apologize to all the animals you once ate, or even visit an animal shelter and remind your self of why you do not eat them? hope this helps ben

Re:Vegetarian for 8 Years - All of a Sudden Craving Meat Badly... - 2008/11/23 23:01 Your body usually craves what it needs (most of the time at least). The only vitamin you cannot get in sufficient amounts on a vegetarian/vegan diet is Vitamin B. Vitamin B is made by bacteria that is normally found on meat and is important to nerve function. The average person, I believe, can store up to 5 years of this vitamin in their body. Try taking a Vitamin B supplement at least once a week. There are a lot of Vitamin B supplements out there that are vegetarian. Look for cyanocobalamin in a non gelatin capsule. The other thing to try is Emergen C packets which are normally added to water.

Re:Vegetarian for 8 Years - All of a Sudden Craving Meat Badly... - 2008/11/30 02:25 It can also be caused by lack of s@x but the vitamin B answer sounds much better!
