stomach problems linked to vegetarian diet? - 2005/06/13 16:14 I`ve been a vegetarian for about nine months now. It hasn`t been very difficult; I don`t miss meat, and my wife has been a vegetarian for many years so there`s great support at home.
But there is one thing I`ve noticed ever since I`ve switched to vegeatarianism: I have recurring stomach problems. Usually, I experience nausea, lack of appetite and a sharpness in my belly similar to what abdominal gas feels like. I get this feeling at about the same time every day, around 5 or 6pm.
No over-the-counter medications seem to work. I`ve tried Pepcid, Tagamet, Simethicone (anti-gas medicine), and Immodium.
I saw a gastroenterologist and he did an upper endoscopy. He found nothing, but he prescribed Rantidine, an antacid medicine. It didn`t do anything.
Has anyone else experienced stomach problems when swithcing to vegetarianism? I`ve read that an adjustment period of a few weeks is normal, but this has been going on for nearly nine months.

Re:stomach problems linked to vegetarian diet? - 2005/06/13 17:36 think old age is to blame yet.
But I do suspect that I have difficulty digesting complex carbohydrates. That seems to make the most sense.
What are some solutions for this problem?

Re:stomach problems linked to vegetarian diet? - 2005/06/13 18:02 discomfort and minimize its consumption until your gut has adapted to its presence. I have also experience this discomfort when I started to eat beans but I did continue eating bean in small amounts and gradually increased it to the level I am gastrointistinally comfortable .I also eat a lot of fibrous foods and that encourage my system to learn metabolizing these complex carbohydates. However there are certain person that really have this allergy and his DNA makeup does not have the the genes that allows easier assimilation of these offending products. These type of people will be better of and comfortable without those indigestible material. I have heard of pharmaceutical products that reputedly alleviate the symptoms of flatulence but as I have never tried it I cannot vouch for their effectiveness. Roy
