stomach problems linked to vegetarian diet? - 2005/06/13 16:14
I`ve been a vegetarian for about nine months now. It hasn`t been very difficult; I don`t miss meat, and my wife has been a vegetarian for many years so there`s great support at home. But there is one thing I`ve noticed ever since I`ve switched to vegeatarianism: I have recurring stomach problems. Usually, I experience nausea, lack of appetite and a sharpness in my belly similar to what abdominal gas feels like. I get this feeling at about the same time every day, around 5 or 6pm. No over-the-counter medications seem to work. I`ve tried Pepcid, Tagamet, Simethicone (anti-gas medicine), and Immodium. I saw a gastroenterologist and he did an upper endoscopy. He found nothing, but he prescribed Rantidine, an antacid medicine. It didn`t do anything. Has anyone else experienced stomach problems when swithcing to vegetarianism? I`ve read that an adjustment period of a few weeks is normal, but this has been going on for nearly nine months.
