Vegan people not into homeopathy/altmed? - 2005/06/13 06:02
Hi. Just curious, are there other people out there who are vegan, but not into the `aternative medicine` lifestyle that goes along with it? It seems almost as if it`s assumed that if you`re vegan, that you also believe/use things such as homeopathy, magnets, theraputic touch, belief in auras, etc. etc. etc. It`s made us stop going to such things as vegan family picnics etc., as we really have very little in common with the people we seem to meet there. Anybody?

Well, you`re the first answer I`ve had. I`m not trying to draw any lines anywhere, just asking who else is out there. For instance, is there anyone else out there who is vegan but believes that homeopathy is nothing more than a placebo? Yes, anybody?

decay. Evidently, the only active ingredient in those pills were the sugar So I really wouldn`t recommend _that_ for anyone. I think people should approach that altmed-stuff with a sound portion of skepticism. How do you feel about acupuncture, btw? I`ve never had any need for trying it, but I`ve heard alot of success stories. Isn`t acupunture becoming almost mainstream nowadays? Karl Erik

Really? When I look through the BMJ, all I find are negative reports. E.g. the following. And, there is a lot more. BMJ 2002;324:565 ( 9 March ) No evidence exists to justify the use of homoeopathy in the NHS, an in-depth analysis of published data has concluded. The study, carried out by the NHS Centre for Reviews and Dissemination, based at York University, reviewed data from over 200 randomised clinical trials of homoeopathy in a variety of conditions. It concluded that not only was there little evidence to support the efficacy of homoeopathy, but the data that did exist were of poor qua lity and came from trials that were often deeply flawed. Common problems included under-powered studies, failure to analyse by intention to treat, and failure to use allocation concealment. Some of the published systematic reviews are criticised for pooling clinically heterogeneous data. "The evidence base for homeopathy needs to be interpreted with caution," stated the review. "All conclusions about effectiveness should b e considered together with the methodological inadequacies of the primary studies and some of the systematic reviews." The homoeopathy report is available at www.york.ac.uk/inst/crd < http://www.york.ac.uk/inst/crd/ehc72.htm > Mark Hunter, Leeds The whole point on going on a themed picnic is to meet and talk to people who are reasonably like minded. Perhaps because I became vegan not because I wished to `join a group`, but because I believe in the basic principle of not eating animals or animal products.

both positive and negative reports! In addition to the ""Clinical Trials of Homoeopathy" I mentioned in the Feb 91 issue, some others reported to be positive are: "ABC of complementary medicine", BMJ 1999, 23 October. "Homeopathy...Upper Respiratory Tract...", BMJ 1994, 19 November. "Effect of Homoeopathic Treatment on Fibrositis," BMJ 1989, 5 August And more. in that basic principle! But what I was wondering was how you could become a vegan and still not have any disagreements with family and friends (since you don`t seem to like disagreements.) If you are new to veganism, that might explain it -- the people who have been vegans for a longer while did not have the support of the medical establishment, and have seen things turn around. Maybe that`s why they tend to be more open minded. If your doctor tells you being vegan is very dangerous to your health and you still go ahead and do it, it is likely to change your perspective a little. Of course, the medical establishment now is much more supportive. (Also, the "b-12" scare is much less of a deal now, so you could be vegan and get all your b-12 from fortified soy or something.)

Until you recover from a disease through homeopathy you'll always be skeptical. Homeopathy cured me of meningitis. I fully depend on it.

My husband and I are not really into the vegan lifestyle - or any predetermined lifestyle. We eat fish occasionally, but no dairy, or other meats. We eat honey. We came to this way of eating because of our science background as well as growing up in Ohio and actually seeing how animals are kept, slaughtered and packaged. We do wear some animal products made by real trappers or from antique stores.
If we ever start explaining our point of view, meat-eaters get antsy and vegans/veggies get antsy. Everyone is irritated that we aren't fully committed to playing on their team with their rules.
He takes Zertek for his allergies and I don't scrutinze my clearasil. We just try not to be wasteful, try to be grateful, and try to keep a moderate mind about everything.
We just do the best we can, in a way that works for us. It is unfortunate that people can be so reactionary with their beliefs and way of life. It is sad, to me, that so many people who chose to live a vegan lifestyle are also so quick to be accusatory and judgmental. Any strict adherance to anything is extremely difficult, and probably not healthy over all. We are all citizens of society, we are all trying to find our way.
