VEGETARIAN COMBINATION DIET CUTS CHOLESTEROL LEVEL - 2005/06/13 03:09 `Combination diet` cuts cholesterol level Monday, December 2, 2002
Washington, December 1 - Researchers at the University of Toronto and St Michael`s Hospital have found that a diet combining a handful of known cholesterol-lowering plant components cuts levels of LDL cholesterol - the so-called "bad" cholesterol, believed to clog coronary arteries, by close to 30 per cent.
The researchers said that the reduction is similar to that achieved by some drug treatments for high cholesterol, suggesting a possible drug-free alternative for combating the condition.
The study, published in Metabolism, is the first to examine the effects of these dietary components in combination.
Scientists have known for many years that, individually, soy proteins, nuts, viscous fibres such as those found in oats and barley, and plant sterols (a substance found in vegetable oils and also in leafy green and non-starch vegetables) have the ability to reduce blood cholesterol levels by approximately four to seven per cent.
However, the new study found that mixing these components together in a "combination diet" reduced bad cholesterol by a dramatic 29 per cent.
The finding suggests this combination diet may be as effective as the first generation of a class of drugs known as statins, which have been the standard drug therapy for high cholesterol for the last 15 years.
"This opens up the possibility that diet can be used much more widely to lower blood cholesterol and possibly spare some individuals from having to take drugs," said lead author David Jenkins, a professor in University of Toronto`s Department of Nutritional Sciences and director of the Clinical Nutrition and Risk Factor Modification Centre at St Michael`s Hospital.

There is this dichotomy in India of starving masses, and masses of animals grazing the earth to dust, depriving people of valuable nutrition. Cull them down to a reasonable number of useful animals, and use the land thus freed up to grow crops for the people. As an added benefit, the culling process will also provide food and protein for the starving people in the interim, cut back on traffic hazards in the cities, and save human lives that are currently being lost in collisions with stray animals.
And, Johnny boya, that _still_ let`s you enjoy your favourite meal of Steak Staines au poivre.

Vegetarian diet is nutritionally complete and is sufficient for human survival. Its a bloody myth propagated in the west that the vegetarian diet is insufficient for human sustenance. You are better off doing some research before you spew your advice. You probably don`t know what vegetarians eat and you havent a clue as to why so many vegetarians are slim, have lower levels of cholesterol and so on.......... vegetarian food made in butter and oil. So again you are wrong about associating vegetarianism with the coronary diseases. You obviously have no idea what Indians eat. factors that Indians are more susceptible to coronary diseases. Also Indians do not do much exrcise, because of the environmental conditions that exist within India. Much of India is mired with heat and humidity levels that are so extreme that it is physically impossible to even go out for a jog on crowded streets and through narrow alleys of India.

Once again, if you are listening and have a good understanding of what is good and bad for one`e health, you sir will stop spewing your bullshit about the "hazards" of vegetarian diet.
Excess consumption of high fat dairy products can cause health related problems, but for you to say that hindu diet is a disaster is the ultimate height of stupidity.
There is no such thing as a "hindu" diet much less as there is a "christian" diet. People all over the world eat different kinds of foods and one just has to manage their caloric intake, have a balnced meal and eat the necessary nutrienets for the body. That includes fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, soy milk, tofu and so on...for the vegetarians.
Do you have any idea how ignorant you are? Probably not!
1. Proteins - The legumes and beans in Indian diet are plentiful.
2. Fats - Oil is used for cooking, some people add butter to their cooking but the fat content of Indian diets is no more or less than a typical diet anywhere else.
3. Fruits & Vegetables - I do not understand what your problem is, sir. How can vegetarian diet be low in vegetable contents? Granted, some people do not eat fruits in large recommended servings, but I don`t know of any one here in the west that eats large quantities of fruits every day either. Most people here eat desserts, candy and chocolate after dinner, not fruits.
But Indian diet aside, your point that the vegetarian diet is unhealthy is so ridiculous, that it doesn`t even merit further discussion. You need to clarify your lies by stating explicitly that its not the vegetarian ingredients that cause the health problems. What causes health problems for Indian people is the high fat contents in their foods.
I decided to waste my time responding to your stupid post only because you thought that people who recommend vegetarian diet are somehow "cultists" spreading their "lies" with an "agenda" on their minds. Nothing could be further from the truth.
