Calling all Vegans - what do you eat for protein - 2005/06/06 00:04 soy is probably a popular choice for protein, but really, if you have a protein problem you aren`t eating a very balanced diet. I mean heck, there`s pita bread at publix that are smaller than a taco shell that have 10g of protein each. Nuts and peanut butter are other sources of protein, but like I said, protein shouldn`t be a huge concern.

Re:Calling all Vegans - what do you eat for protein - 2005/06/06 00:41 The impression I get is that it is hard to NOT eat protein. Hell, even beer contains protein, though it would probably not be a good idea to try to meet your daily protein requirements from beer alone.
The only problem is that there are actually lots of different sorts of protein. If my memory serves me correctly, there are something like 20. The human body is able to convert one sort of protein into another to some extent, but there are about 9 sorts of protein you really can`t do without. When a product claims to contain a certain amount of protein, this figure is a simplification of the truth. However all I`ve heard suggests that people with fairly normal needs (athletes may be different) who eat a varied diet (so not just bread, or not just baked beans) and who get enough calories (so not anorexics) are not at all likely to have protein problems.
For a more professional view see ADA`s position paper:
I have heard that about 50 years ago the recommended daily allowance for protein was (wrongly) much higher than it is now, and difficult to attain from a vegetarian diet. This might explain why people continue to think protein deficiency is particularly likely to be a problem for vegetarians; old myths die hard.

Re:Calling all Vegans - what do you eat for protein - 2009/06/01 18:11 I am an extreme example of protein intake for a vegan. Strength athletes are usually hitting somewhere in the 1-2 grams per pound of lean mass. I still get enough protein. I use soy in all of its various forms (no I am not concerned about phytoestrogens). I also like hemp (great protein), nuts, beans, seitan (very good), tempeh (another great source), various vegan protein powders like Sun Warrior, hemp protein powder, and products like Vega.

Re:Calling all Vegans - what do you eat for protein - 2009/08/08 08:54 I wouldn't worry about a colon cleanse. From what I understand, they are useless. I heard an interview with Dr. McDougall once and he said that he has seen hundreds of colons in his practice and could not remember a time where he though one needed a cleansing. Also, a lot of those gross pics you see are merely strands of fiber and not years of built up gunk. In my opinion, your better off by trying to get more fiber in your diet.
