why meat substitute? - 2005/06/05 23:34 hi all I`m new in this group. I don`t eat meat because it doesn`t make complete sense the way we go about keeping livestock, and I don`t really get the urge to eat meat anyway. I have nothing against people eating meat and I never ever preach to them to stop, (even though I have many good reasons)
But I find them preaching to me to eat meat!
Most "meat eating" people "I" know (in UK) eat as follows breakfast - cornflakes with milk or egg and bacon etc. +coffe or tea dinner - sandwitch with meat or something - or a light meal ( chips - beans - sausage etc) - tea or coffee or occasional McD tea - mashed potato egg and beans or chips and steak -maybe veg or chilliconcarne or something - beer tea coffee
I have heard on most occasions people telling me to watch my diet when I dont eat meat etc.
I agree that I should watch my diet but sureley the above diet is doomed anyway.
I know theres a need to watch protein and vitamins but I can`t understand why eveyones so scared of not eating meat.
I also can`t understand why people have to rethink their whole way of cooking, like as if meat was born directly in the pan or something. thanks for clearing anything up. Lid

Re:why meat substitute? - 2005/06/06 01:24 vegetarians/vegans need to be especially careful of getting enough of both, or that foods must be properly combined to derive their full nutritional benefit. Just eat a well-balanced diet of fruits, grains, and vegetables, and you`ll get everything you need. Check out _Diet for a New America_ by John Robbins for a discussion of this. since B-12 is not normally found in plant matter aside from certain seaweeds, but is produced by some yeasts. However, there is no scientific consensus on the need for a B-12 supplement, some pointing out that the body is capable of manufacturing the vitamin on it`s own, and others claiming that there is enough of the vitamin in the soil in which we grow the plants we eat, and still others noting that our bodies can store up to five years worth of the stuff in any case.

Re:why meat substitute? - 2005/06/06 01:55 diets, especially when it comes to fats and obesity.
However, as a vegetarian or a vegan you should also watch your diet in order to ensure you eat the *right* foods; that you have the right vitamins and minerals, enough protein and carbohydrates and so on in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
The common conception amongst meat eaters is that a vegetarian is thin and sickly looking, and that a vegan must be even worse. For younger people just starting out, who haven`t necessarily thought through what they are doing, this may well be the case. However, I`ve been a vegetarian for over 29 years now, am well built to muscular and maintain a very active and healthy lifestyle. Meat eaters refuse to believe that I am a vegetarian, and it is very difficult to convince them they are living under an illusion of what a vegetarian is.

Re:why meat substitute? - 2005/06/06 03:01 there`s a lot of sense in what both of you write, but when it comes to vitamin B12 (if you are a vegan), I`d strongly advise you to check out the links below. E.g. seaweeds are not a (reliable) source of B12.
The Vegan Soiciety: http://www.vegansociety.com/html/info/b12sheet.htm The Vegetarian Society: http://www.vegsoc.org/info/b12.html The Vegetarian Resource Group: http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/b12.htm
From the The Vegan Society page: "Claimed sources of B12 that have been shown through direct studies of vegans to be inadequate include human gut bacteria, spirulina, dried nori, barley grass and most other seaweeds. Several studies of raw food vegans have shown that raw food offers no special protection."

Re:why meat substitute? - 2005/06/06 04:24 take a B-12 supplement, the only vitamin supplement I take -- and that only because, as I noted, there has been disagreement on the need for it in a vegan diet. (There is, as far as I`m aware, no disagreement on the lack of need to supplement other vitamins.) I figure better safe than sorry, and since B-12 can be derived from non-animal sources, and an overdose can cause no problems, there`s no harm done.
