Re:Im a newbie......where do I start? - 2005/05/31 21:45
The first thing you should do is go to a bookstore (or an on-line bookstore) and look in the cooking section. There are many, many vegetarian cookbooks. Some of my favorite are" "Moosewood restaurant cooks at home" by the Moosewood collective "Moosewood restaurant low-fat favorites" by the Moosewood collective "Horn of the Moon cookbook" by Ginny Callan "Vegetarian times low fat and fast" by the editors of the vegetarian times magazine. Next, I would subscribe to the Vegetarian times magazine. It has lots of articles on various vegetarian issues, as well as recipes. Finally, I would try to find a vegetarian organization in your area. The best way to find such an organization is look on community bulletin boards at natural food stores, food co-ops, and some "progressive" supermarkets. Health clubs may also be a good place to look. Also, if there is a Seventh day Adventist church nearby, they will almost certainly be able to direct you to a local vegetarian organization. (Seventh day Adventist are vegans) Also a word of advice. I would not mention to non-veg friends and family about becoming a vegetarian until you have become fully committed and have a support group behind you. (such as a vegetarian organization) Furthermore, vegetarians DO get enough protein in their diet, so don`t let people tell you otherwise. If you are used to meat and potatoes, vegetarian cooking may seem involved at first, but don`t let that discourage you. Best of luck!!
