Im a newbie......where do I start? - 2005/05/31 19:23 Thanks for reading.....
I decided about four days ago to become a vegetarian. Partly because I have never really liked alot of meat...finding myself eating the outer edges of a burger and trying to find the flatest, thinest piece of chicken as to not get the full flavor. I have never liked seafood or pork. I dont know where to start. Its easy to think **hmm, I just dont eat meat anymore**... but now its been really hard looking for foods that can be a substitute. These last four days I have been cooking for my son and fiance like usual (meat, veggy, potato or rice) and I have been eating everything but the meat portion and eating some beans along with it. Our family is so used to a meat-based diet, that I am getting stumped looking for alternatives. Ive been on the web looking all over and I just dont see anything that seems to have a "filling" ingredient that would do. What can I do in these next few days while getting some reciped together that wont put me on the road to failure? I have good feelings about this new lifestyle and I just dont want to bail out.

Re:Im a newbie......where do I start? - 2005/05/31 21:45 The first thing you should do is go to a bookstore (or an on-line bookstore) and look in the cooking section. There are many, many vegetarian cookbooks. Some of my favorite are"
"Moosewood restaurant cooks at home" by the Moosewood collective "Moosewood restaurant low-fat favorites" by the Moosewood collective "Horn of the Moon cookbook" by Ginny Callan "Vegetarian times low fat and fast" by the editors of the vegetarian times magazine.
Next, I would subscribe to the Vegetarian times magazine. It has lots of articles on various vegetarian issues, as well as recipes.
Finally, I would try to find a vegetarian organization in your area. The best way to find such an organization is look on community bulletin boards at natural food stores, food co-ops, and some "progressive" supermarkets. Health clubs may also be a good place to look. Also, if there is a Seventh day Adventist church nearby, they will almost certainly be able to direct you to a local vegetarian organization. (Seventh day Adventist are vegans)
Also a word of advice. I would not mention to non-veg friends and family about becoming a vegetarian until you have become fully committed and have a support group behind you. (such as a vegetarian organization)
Furthermore, vegetarians DO get enough protein in their diet, so don`t let people tell you otherwise.
If you are used to meat and potatoes, vegetarian cooking may seem involved at first, but don`t let that discourage you.
Best of luck!!

Re:Im a newbie......where do I start? - 2005/06/01 02:56 my favorite food/lifestyle/cooking magazine, I can no longer support it`s use as a respectable source of vegetarian information. It has completely lost its tone of advocacy and activism on behalf of the vegetarian lifestyle, and no longer contains "lots" of recipes. As one critic put it, "they should change the name to `Vegetarian SomeTimes.`"
If you`d like to know why in detail, you need look no farther than the message board on the Vegetarian Times` own website--lots of criticism there.
However, the back issues are priceless, and there still is good information to be found on the website, and in the exchanges taking place on the message board. Check it out:

Re:Im a newbie......where do I start? - 2005/06/01 03:16 Why not try some of the heaps of meat substitutes around??
I guess you are in the US, there is heaps of stuff that`s vegetarian. Gimme Lean is one, I can`t remember the brands, you can get veg chicken nuggets, vegetarian sausages, burgers, mince etc. It must be common in lots of your shops?

Re:Im a newbie......where do I start? - 2005/06/01 08:02 As an alternative, I would suggest a subscription to The Vegetarian Culinarian. The recipes that I have seen in it`s pages taste really good and use common ingredients that you can get at your grocery store instead of all that exotic stuff.
