Reasons for animal-free habits... - 2005/04/27 17:01 I`m a highschooler who`s been a vegetarian for a little over a year and I have a hard time when I`m with friends who aren`t vegetarian and who just don`t get it. Even some members of my family don`t get it. For next time I get the opportunity I want to have a good set of arguments to throw at them. So, I was wondering how you people felt about it? What is it that really turns you off to meat?
If we lived in a perfect world, we`d all be vegetarian.

Re:Reasons for animal-free habits... - 2005/04/28 10:31 gained through confrontation.
However, I tell people who are curious "I am vegetarian for my health, for the health of animals, and for the health of the earth". It`s healthier for me because I try to avoid saturated fats, cholesterol, growth hormones, antibiotics, steroids, etc. I also don`t worry as much about salmonella, mad cow disease, trichinosis, e-coli, etc. It`s healthier for animals because I am trying to do my small part to reduce the demand for meat (animals appreciate that!). And it`s healthier for the earth since meat requires something like 80 times (!) the fossil fuels and water than plant based foods to produce the same amount of food calories. Meat production also contributes to global warming (methane). Plants serve to neutralize global warming by reducing carbon dioxide while producing oxygen.
These are some of my reasons for making a vegetarian lifestyle change. Your reasons may or may not coincide with mine.
Hope it helps, Jim

Re:Reasons for animal-free habits... - 2005/04/28 10:37 vegetarian. If you do not know why, that is also OK. When I heard about vegetarianism, I just recognized how smart that is, or better - how normal. That is a normal diet for me, and a matter of natural intelligence - one that does not care much about arguments *Last* century was the one of communications, so I always considered it a common knowledge - that vegetarians live longer and have better life quality. Best argument for me is that God says in Gita that we should eat vegetables. Some religions look favorably on vegetarian diet as more virtuous and helpful for realizing spiritual matters. Or to put it in another way - other eating habits are degrading.
If you are still in need of some arguments, here is what I found (pardon the long message) :
