Re:Reasons for animal-free habits... - 2005/04/28 10:31
gained through confrontation. However, I tell people who are curious "I am vegetarian for my health, for the health of animals, and for the health of the earth". It`s healthier for me because I try to avoid saturated fats, cholesterol, growth hormones, antibiotics, steroids, etc. I also don`t worry as much about salmonella, mad cow disease, trichinosis, e-coli, etc. It`s healthier for animals because I am trying to do my small part to reduce the demand for meat (animals appreciate that!). And it`s healthier for the earth since meat requires something like 80 times (!) the fossil fuels and water than plant based foods to produce the same amount of food calories. Meat production also contributes to global warming (methane). Plants serve to neutralize global warming by reducing carbon dioxide while producing oxygen. These are some of my reasons for making a vegetarian lifestyle change. Your reasons may or may not coincide with mine. Hope it helps, Jim
