are veggies really safe? - 2009/05/17 19:34
Hello m3shagurl - I found a good article on this subject here
http://www.americanscientist.org/issues/feature/2007/6/safer-salads/7
In general, bacteria prefer to live in meat and the odds of you getting poisoned by eating meat are much greater than by eating plants. Also, a lot of farms no longer use animal waste as a fertilizer. Manure used to be a very cheap and effective fertilizer but the introduction of factory farms has transformed this once usable product into toxic waste. Factory farms are a great breeding ground for bad bacteria as animals are packed into crowded conditions which allow the bacteria to easily go from one animal to the other. As a result, these animals are given large doses of antibiotics. These conditions produce animal waste that is terrible for the environment and can be the cause of things like the E Coli outbreak in California spinach. Having said that, the odds of you becoming ill from meat are much greater than plants. The best thing to do is to try and buy organic when possible and wash any produce thoroughly before buying it.
I think it is commendable that you have chosen not to eat meat. Your choice will mean less suffering for animals and a better environment for everyone. Just a word of caution, their are a lot of idiots out there who could care less about the environment or the feelings of others but feel threatened by your choice not to eat meat. The best thing a vegetarian can do is learn more about vegetarian/vegan diets and be armed with information. Read forums like this one and get as much information as you can because you will need it. Here is a website to help you get started on how to answer the stupid questions you will hear.

Just remember though, sometimes people really do have honest questions about being a vegetarian and you can use that as a learning experience and a way to promote a vegetarian diet. Good luck and keep us posted on how things are working out.
